…The European Commission makes direct financial contributions in the form of grants through European structural and investment funds and research and innovation programmes, which have been and will be the main source of funding for many projects in the area of energy efficiency and climate protection. Funding for regional and cohesion policy in the period of 2014-2020 amounts to significant 351.8 bn EUR and the Horizon 2020 as the biggest EU research and innovation programme ever has nearly 80 billion EUR of funding available or the 7 years (2014-2020). Those funds will to a great extent be used by local and regional actors in the member states of the FEDARENE association. Of course, the importance and the impact of the European Commission is not only in funding. In my experience, equally important is the inspiration and motivation from Brussels which helps on gathering together the necessary political, official and technical support in our regions, cities and municipalities. In many sustainable energy projects, it is the European dimension which makes them so attractive and possible. Without this very real contribution and commitment from Brussels, many now successful initiatives and project would not even start…
Mechthild Wӧrsdӧrfer (Head of Directorate A – Energy Policy) te g.
